ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CHURCH WEDDING MUSIC POLICY
On behalf of the entire staff at St. Gregory's, I would like to offer you my sincere congratulations on your upcoming wedding. As your wedding will take place within the context of a liturgical celebration, all music chosen for the wedding should reflect that fact. Suitable musical selections enhance the liturgy while containing the appropriate pastoral message. As with any liturgy, the music for your wedding should possess a high level of integrity, both musical and theological. Within these guidelines, there is an ample choice: sacred music from both the traditional and contemporary repertoires, as well as classical instrumental music. Unfortunately, most popular love songs and many "contemporary Christian" ballads are not suitable* for use during your wedding liturgy. Many of these songs are more appropriately heard at the wedding reception.
I have prepared a list of wedding music to assist you in your choice of music. It contains a representative collection of musical possibilities for each section of the liturgy. You are not limited to these selections, but I recommend that you listen to them carefully and use it as your primary reference. Any music selected that is not on the website list will require the approval of the pastoral staff and myself. Cantors are a required part of the ceremony, but I also highly encourage you to explore the possibility of using additional instruments.
Weddings at St. Gregory the Great Church involve the following fees for the musicians:
Patrick Godon, (Director of Liturgy and Music / organist / pianist)
cantor from the St. Gregory Music Department - REQUIRED
other instrumentalists (arranged by Patrick) $250.00/instrument
Please note: All fees are to be paid in full to the church at least one week in advance of the wedding. Also, due to past experiences, if the wedding starts 20 minutes late or more, there will be no music provided for the wedding and no refund for the musician’s fees. We understand emergencies arise, but they are the exception and not the norm.
We regret that we are unable to accommodate organists, instrumentalists or vocalists from outside of our music staff. We have excellent, experienced musicians who are able to perform music of various styles, and who also are familiar with the traditions of Catholic liturgies, and of our own parish. This policy has proved to be the most successful and practical for all parties involved.
*Wedding songs are unsuitable for liturgy when they:
1) fail to focus on or support the liturgical action of the wedding
2) are set to inappropriate music
3) allude only faintly or indirectly to the Christian nature of love; explicitly or implicitly deny the Christian dimension of love (e.g. 'my life has no meaning without you' or 'you're all I need.')
